Analogies                                                                                                                          Class:__________

You will see 19 analogy questions on the SAT test.  One of your 30-minute Verbal sections will contain a group of six analogies; the other will contain a group of thirteen.  Each group will be arranged from easy to very hard. The instructions are:

Each question below consists of a related pair of words or phrases, followed by five pairs of words or phrases labeled A through E.  Select the pair that best expresses a relationship similar to that expressed in the original pair.

Example:

     CRUMB:BREAD::

(A)  ounce:unit

(B)   splinter:wood

(C)  water:bucket

(D)  twine:rope

(E)   cream:butter

The sample question’s answer is B.  A crumb is a small piece of bread, just like a splinter is a small piece of wood.

When you see an analogy, make a sentence out of the stem words:

APPLE:FRUIT::                                 An apple ________________________________________ fruit.

Your sentence should use one word to somehow define the other, be short and simple, and start with one word and end with another.
